Italy Earthquake Death Toll Mounts...

At least 40 people are reported dead and dozens are missing in an earthquake which has flattened homes in central Italy.

Officials in the town of L'Aquila, at the centre of the region in Italy hit by the earthquake, say they believe there are people still trapped under collapsed buildings.

Four children were killed after their house in L'Aquila collapsed, while another child and an elderly woman died in the nearby town of Fossa.

Italian news reports said they died after ''the side of a mountain'' crashed onto the village and that residents were now on a playing field waiting for help.

Five people were also killed in the village of Castelnuovo but civil protection officials said they feared the figure would rise.

Sirens blared across the city as rescue workers raced to find people in the rubble.

Thousands of the city's 60,000 residents fled into the streets fearing aftershocks.

Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi cancelled a planned trip to Moscow after hearing of the quake.

And the Pope led prayers for the victims at the Vatican.

Guido Bertolaso, head of the Italian Civil Defence, said: ''Many, many buildings have collapsed and there are people trapped inside.

''Emergency services are travelling to the scene and we are working on rescuing people who are trapped.

''Thousands of people have been left homeless and we are providing emergency shelters such as tents for them.''

He added: ''This is the worst disaster to have hit Italy in the last ten years and I would appeal to people not to go to the area.''

Emergency services were also focusing their attention on a university hall of residence in L'Aquila which had partially collapsed with students inside.

The town's university hospital was declared 'off-limits' for fear it would collapse and the worst victims were being taken by helicopter to other cities.

Matthew Peacock, who lives with his wife and child in the Umbrian town of Amelia told Sky News: "It felt like the house was being shaken from the rooftop - my bed was banging against the wall and you could hear this creaking.

"I rushed across the hallway to my son, who's five, grabbed him and stood underneath the doorway. The shaking went on for 20 seconds or so."

The area around L'Aquila has been the scene of intense earthquake activity since October.

Before last night's tremor there was another smaller one around midnight which measured 4.6 on the Richter scale.

Aquila is a picturesque medieval town and has been hit by severe tremors twice before in 1461 and 1703. Both times the city was virtually destroyed.

To aid emergency services the main motorway linking Rome to Aquila was closed while airspace was also shut down so that helicopters could fly in with tents and other supplies.

Rafael Abreu, of the US Geological Survey, told Sky News the quake happened at 3.32am local time.

"This is a significant earthquake," he said. "This is a shallow quake but there is definitely a possibility of damage and even injuries."

Devido ao número de desaparecidos e a extensão da destruição provocada pelo tremor, a Defesa Civil local estima que o índice de mortos deve crescer nas próximas horas.

Milhares de pessoas estão desabrigadas ou desalojadas nas regiões atingidas.

As informações sobre a força do tremor, que ocorreu às 3h45 desta segunda (22h45 de domingo em Brasília) ainda são confusas. Enquanto parte das agências de notícias estima magnitude de 5,8 graus na escala Richter, outras fontes afirmam que o terremoto chegou a 6,3 graus na mesma escala.

O Centro Nacional de Informações de Terremotos dos Estados Unidos, por exemplo, informou que o terremoto atingiu 6,3 graus na escala Richter, e teve epicentro a 95 km de Roma, a uma profundidade de 10 km.

O diário italiano La República informa, na sua página na internet, que a magnitude do tremor foi de 6,7 graus, e o epicentro teria sido localizado em Arischia, entre as regiões de Lazio e Abruzzo.

A desperate search for survivors is on in and around the Italian city of L'Aquila after a quake killed, Italian media say, at least 150 people.

Some 5,000 rescuers are picking through rubble in the walled medieval city and nearby towns and villages, some of them said to have been virtually destroyed.

Tents are being put up in tennis courts and on football pitches to house some of the 30,000-40,000 homeless.

The number of people injured has been put at 1,500.

Italy's PM Silvio Berlusconi declared a state of emergency in the region.

Gianfranco Fini, speaker of the lower house of parliament, told MPs: "Some towns in the area have been virtually destroyed in their entirety."

Such is the damage in L'Aquila, where between 3,000 and 10,000 buildings were reportedly affected, that the city will be uninhabitable for some time, the BBC's David Willey reports.

Surrounding villages were also hit hard: * In the village of Onna, 24 people were killed, according to the Italian news agency Ansa; the village of 250 was virtually deserted as survivors sought shelter * In Castelnuovo, a village of about 300 people, five deaths were confirmed

It has been reported that a major earthquake in the L'Aquila area was predicted by an Italian scientist several weeks ago.

But a spokesman for the Italian Civil Protection Agency, Dr Agostino Miozzo, was adamant that this was not possible.

"We can only say that an area is prone to earthquakes," he told the BBC.

"From here down to Sicily is historically an area interspersed by earthquakes, but even that we cannot predict."

Fire-fighters aided by dogs worked feverishly to reach people trapped in fallen buildings in L'Aquila, including a student dormitory where several students were believed to be still inside.

Residents and rescuers used their bare hands to clear the debris from collapsed buildings.

"We are not using machines for this because experience has shown us that it is important to dig by hand [to avoid further casualties]," said Mr Berlusconi after arriving in L'Aquila.

He said a field hospital, 2,000 tents and 4,000 hotel rooms were being made available.

"I can assure you that there is no building that has fallen down without rescuers, without fire brigade being there," he told reporters.

Italy, he said, had the resources it needed to deal with the disaster: "Financially, there are no problems. The government has all the necessary funds at its disposal. We also have the EU catastrophe fund."

Officials say 26 cities and towns have been damaged in the region, not including villages and hamlets.

There have been stories of rescues all day, the BBC's Duncan Kennedy reports from L'Aquila.

Men, women and children have been brought out of the rubble, some carried on ladders used as makeshift stretchers, some screaming with delight at having survived.

The 6.3-magnitude quake struck at 0330 (0130 GMT) close to L'Aquila, 95km (60 miles) north-east of Rome.

It lasted about 30 seconds, bringing down many Renaissance-era and Baroque buildings, including the dome on one of L'Aquila's churches.

Boulders fell off mountain slopes, blocking roads. Houses were reduced to piles of rubble and cars crushed by raining debris.

One resident, Antonio di Marco, recounted his experience for the BBC: "We escaped outside like madmen, we didn't understand what was happening, the whole building was moving under our feet, it is something that's impossible to describe"

"It's a catastrophe and an immense shock," resident Renato Di Stefano told the Associated Press as he and his family headed for shelter in a tent camp outside L'Aquila.

"It's struck in the heart of the city, we will never forget the pain."

Dr Miozzo said many survivors faced a rough night ahead.

"Tonight we'll have a great number of people that will sleep in their car, people that will go to their relatives in the neighbouring area, in the neighbouring towns that are in safe conditions," he told the BBC.

"But they are very shocked, you see, especially the aged people and obviously children."

Phone and power lines have been down and some bridges and roads have been closed as a precaution against aftershocks.

Italy lies on two fault lines and has been hit by powerful earthquakes in the past, mainly in the south of the country.

World leaders have sent messages of condolence and Pope Benedict XVI offered prayers for the "victims, especially the children".

È l'ultimo aggiornamento del bilancio diffuso sulla base di quanto risulta da fonti ospedaliere. Anche la Protezione civile, che in un crescendo durato tutta la giornata ha dovuto via via ritoccare quello che assomiglia sempre di più a un bollettino di guerra, ha confermato queste stime. Al momento sono 60 le persone estratte vive dalle macerie degli edifici. Le prime notizie, all'alba, parlavano di una quindicina di persone decedute. Ma è stato subito chiaro che il numero sarebbe stato destinato a crescere con il passare delle ore e con la rimozione delle macerie sotto cui sono rimaste sepolte centinaia di persone sorprese nel sonno.

SCOSSA NELLA NOTTE - La scossa principale si è registrata attorno alle 3,30 e ha fatto registrare 5,8 gradi della scala Richter. L'epicentro è stato individuato a una decina di chilometri dall'Aquila. Il sisma è stato avvertito in tutto il centro-sud d'Italia, dalla Romagna a Napoli. Oltre ai morti e ai dispersi, i feriti sono circa 1.500 e si calcola che siano almeno 100 mila gli sfollati, intere famiglie costrette ad allontanarsi dalle proprie abitazioni. Una prima stima parla di 10-15 mila edifici danneggiati con pesanti danni al patrimonio storico e artistico della regione. Franco Barberi, presidente onorario della Commissione nazionale grandi rischi, fa sapere che nei prossimi mesi «è poco probabile che si verifichino scosse di grande energia, ma non lo possiamo escludere». Dopo quella devastante della notte, ha aggiunto Barberi, «si sono registrate circa 200 repliche, la maggior parte di piccola magnitudo».

STATO DI EMERGENZA - Il presidente del Consiglio, Silvio Berlusconi, che ha firmato lo stato d'emergenza (mobilitando esercito, aeronautica e carabinieri) e ha affidato la gestione a Guido Bertolaso, ha annullato la prevista visita ufficiale a Mosca e si è subito recato all'Aquila insieme ai ministri dell'Interno, Roberto Maroni, e delle Infrastrutture e dei trasporti, Altero Matteoli. Il capo della Protezione civile, che è giunto in Abruzzo nelle prime ore dopo il sisma, ha parlato di una «situazione drammatica, la peggiore tragedia di questo inizio millenio». Dopo l'arrivo all'Aquila, Berlusconi ha tenuto una prima conferenza stampa per fare il punto sulla situazione. «In volo ho visto che dovunque c'è un crollo, c'è qualcuno che aiuta. Nessuno sarà lasciato solo», ha detto il presidente del Consiglio, annunciando tra l'altro l'immediato stanziamento di fondi per fare fronte all'emergenza.

«IMPOSSIBILE PREVENIRE» - Il terremoto è avvenuto alle 3,32 di lunedì notte alla profondità di 8,8 km. Giulio Selvaggi, direttore del Centro nazionale terremoti, ha dichiarato che un sisma di 5,8 gradi Richter è considerato «moderato, con un'intensità 30 volte inferiore a quella che nel 1980 devastò l'Irpinia». L'Abruzzo, che è situato in una delle zone a maggiore rischio sismico della penisola, è interessato da uno sciame di terremoti iniziato lo scorso 16 gennaio con centinaia di scosse e con la Protezione civile che da tre mesi tranquillizza la popolazione sui rischi di un sisma distruttivo. Il capo della Protezione civile, Guido Bertolaso, ha dichiarato che era impossibile prevedere il terremoto, ma già infuriano le polemiche per la messa in guardia della scorsa settimana su un'imminente scossa del ricercatore Giuliani, poi indagato per procurato allarme.

CENTRI URBANI DEVASTATI- Centinaia gli edifici crollati completamente o in parte, migliaia quelli lesionati e inagibili. «Il centro storico di L'Aquila è devastato, e anche le case nuove ci vorrà tempo per controllare tutti gli edifici. Quasi tutta la città è inagibile», ha detto il sindaco dell'Aquila, Massimo Cialente. Gli sfollati potrebbero essere 45-50 mila solo all'Aquila, e altrettanti in provincia. I soccorsi sono resi difficili dalle continue scosse di assestamento che rischiano di far crollare gli edifici danneggiati e dal fatto che la prefettura, dalla quale si dovevano coordinare i soccorsi, è interamente distrutta. Anche la sede della provincia e altri uffici regionali sono pesantemente compromessi. Il sindaco dell'Aquila ha invitato i cittadini «a lasciare immediatamente il centro storico, perché anche le case non crollate possono essere gravemente lesionate». Uno degli edifici maggiormente danneggiati del capoluogo era stato la Casa dello studente: si temeva che vi fossero molte vittime, invece nel pomeriggio è arrivata la notizia che sei ragazzi sono stati estratti vivi dalle macerie della palazzina.

Terremoto in Abruzzo, Berlusconi: firmato stato di emergenza...

Dopo il terremoto in Abruzzo Berlusconi ha annunciato: "Firmato lo stato di emergenza e i fondi sono pronti per le zone colpite dal sisma. E' una situazione che non ha precedenti nel 2000 come ha detto Bertolaso, ma sappiamo che il nostro Paese è soggetto a queste scosse periodiche. Letta e Bertolaso stanno monitorando attentamente la situazione".

Un violento terremoto di magnitudo 5,8 della scala Richter ha colpito l'Abruzzo e il centro Italia. L'epicentro del sisma è stato registrato a L'Aquila, dove sono crollati diversi edifici e molte persone sono rimaste intrappolate tra le macerie.
